Democrats and Republicans Wednesday were preparing for the fall contest in Alabama’s 2nd Congressional District between U.S. Rep. Shomari Figures, D-Mobile and Republican nominee Rhett Marques, a battle which could help determine control of Congress next year. The GOP-controlled Legislature redrew the district earlier this year to be more favorable to Republicans, but Democrats said Wednesday they believed Figures could win re-election.

Democratic gubernatorial nominee Doug Jones reiterated his support for a yearlong data center moratorium during two campaign stops in central Alabama on Wednesday and criticized Republican nominee Tommy Tuberville for recently calling Social Security a “scam.” Jones held a town hall in Montgomery and a press conference near the site of a proposed data center in Lowndes County that has drawn local opposition.

The Alabama Department of Corrections Thursday plans to execute Jeremy Williams by lethal injection. A jury in 2024 convicted Williams, 41, of the murder and sexual assault of a child in Russell County. Williams waived his appeals and asked for his execution to be expedited. One execution scheduled for March was canceled after Gov. Kay Ivey commuted the inmate’s sentence. A federal court blocked a second in June, though it has been rescheduled.
