More states this year have looked beyond traditional counseling and medication to help first responders cope with post-traumatic stress. States are embracing a range of approaches from creating commissions to review applications for assistance with PTSD to allowing research into the effects of psilocybin on trauma. First responders routinely witness fatal crashes, violent crimes and other traumatic events that can leave lasting psychological scars.

Alabama is set to receive $87 million in funding intended to continue ongoing restoration efforts from the 2010 Deepwater Horizon oil spill, which ravaged the coasts and economies of Mobile and Baldwin counties. Catherine Dorrough writes that the money is welcome but that the state needs to develop a “culture of conservation” to preserve the state’s rich ecological heritage.

The Great American State Fair on the National Mall in Washington D.C. Tuesday had all the trappings of a classic state fair, from food to rides. The one thing missing was the crowds. Concessions were unfilled and the mostly small state exhibits had few lines to get in. While each state is represented at the fair, not every state has sent an official delegation to staff their exhibits.
