Three schools in the University of Alabama System have removed language including LGBTQ+ individuals in the schools’ non-discrimination policies. The University of Alabama; the University of Alabama Birmingham and the University of Alabama Huntsville all took out the language in last several months. Representatives of UA and UAB said the new language would provide sufficient protections.

Alabama Power reported a 15% increase in its second-quarter profits over 2025, according to a Southern Company report filed last week. The utility said the increase was due to a decrease in its expenses. Alabama has some of the highest residential power charges in the South, but the Legislature this spring approved a bill to make it significantly more difficult for the Public Service Commission to hold formal hearings on utility rates.

More than 20,000 unaccompanied immigrant children Monday lost their legal representation because the Trump administration allowed a longstanding contract with a nonprofit expire. Immigrant attorneys and advocates fear the loss will put children on a fast track to deportations; fewer than 10% win the right to remain in the United States without legal representation.
